    Sometimes pinkeye may become chronic, and ongoing and may last up to 3 weeks. But as we mentioned above, it usually goes away within 7 to 10 days. Medicine is not usually used to treat viral pinkeye. Home treatment can help you feel more comfortable while the infection goes away.

    • The white part of your eye becomes red
    • Your upper eyelid swell
    • You feel mild pain

    Bacterial pinkeye is more dangerous than viral pinkeye. If you don’t use antibiotic treatment, it usually lasts 7 to 10 days. With antibiotic treatment, it lasts 2 to 4 days.

    Home Remedies For Pink Eye

    1. Honey

    Honey has antibacterial and antibiotic properties. In one study, researchers have found that honey significantly reduces the bacteria found on and around the eye.

    You will need:

    • ¼ teaspoon of raw honey
    • ¼ cup of distilled or reverse osmosis water


    Mix ¼ teaspoon raw honey with ¼ cup pure warm mater. Place 1-2 drops of the mixture in each eye every few hour using a clean dropper. You can also use the mixture as an eyewash several times a day.

    2. Breast Milk

    Breast milk contains an antibody called immunoglobulin A. This prevents the bacteria from attaching to the surface of the eye. As a result, bacteria’s growth stops.


    Place a few drops of breast milk onto the surface of your eye using a clean spoon. Then lift your eyelids slightly. This will help the milk circulate underneath.

    Do this 2-3 times a day for a few days. Your pinkeye will go away.

    3. Teas

    Black and green teas contain bioflavonoids. They reduce inflammation and fight viral and bacterial infection.

    You will need:

    • A moist teabag


    Put a moist tea bag on the affected eye. This will help ease the infection. Do this 3-4 times a day. Use black tea if possible. It can reduce inflammation more quickly.

    4. Goldenseal

    This plant has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Goldenseal fights infection and kills the bacteria that causes pinkeye.

    You will need:

    • 1/8 teaspoons of goldenseal
    • 1 cup of boiled water
    • Chamomile
    • Comfrey


    Mix a small amount of chamomile and comfrey with goldenseal and boiled water. Steep for 15 minutes. Then strain it and use it as an eye drop.

    5. Neem Oil

    Neem oil has soothing and gentle properties. It also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial components. These components can relieve the symptoms of pinkeye.


    Wipe neem oil around your eye and eyelids before going to sleep. It will give you relief from the pain.

    When Should You Call Your Doctor

    Most cases of pinkeye get better without treatment. Severe cases need to be looked at by a doctor.

    You should call your doctor if:

    • You wear contact lense, and have pinkeye
    • You feel pain in the eye, not just irritation
    • You can’t see properly
    • The skin around your eye became red
    • Pinkeye doesn’t go away after 6-7 days
    • You think you have an object on your eye

    Pinkeye Prevention

    Pinkeye is very contagious. Since there is usually no medical treatment for pinkeye caused by viruses, preventing spread is very important.

    Follow these tips to prevent the spread of pinkeye:

    • Wash your hands before and after touching your eyes
    • Do not share contact lense equipment
    • Do not share makeup
    • Do not use contact lense until the symptoms go away. Wear glasses.
    • Do not share towels or handkerchiefs
    • You think you have an object on your eye


    You can also use warm or cold compresses to relieve pain. Use whichever feels best. It will soothe your eye and help reduce redness and swelling. Compresses can spread infection from one eye to another. So use a different one for each eye.
